The rules in film making are more general guidelines than actual rules. The so called "rules" improve the quality of the final result. But when writing the script and such, there is more freedom. And in my opinion, less rules.

art is the freedom of expression, really. if you gave art rules, you'd be restricting yourself, and you'd be restricting your full potential by doing so. no rules, no limits.

I believe it does, sort of.

It really depends what you mean. Like in photograpy there are a few rules to make a better pic.
Like making sure its focused. The only time that rule doesn't apply is if that was the intent.

There are def rules when choosing the content of art. People say that art is about self expression but if you think about it there are some subjects that are a naughty no no. Taking pictures of Naked children for example.

No, no rules.

Some art may be considered trash, but its that artist's vision. Even if somebody doesn't follow the "rules" of photography, they aren't any less of an artist.

This is why avant-garde exists, which generally I personally think is retarded.

Like Yoko Ono's little thing with filming people's asses and calling it interesting art.

I don't know why that is artistic, but whatever.

If there are no rules set, there is no way to define art.

No, art is freedom.

it is.
there are loose rules,( i'd be more inclined to call them guidelines) it works just as well when you break them.

Yes there are rules, they are probably things people are over looking through.

A photograph must be taken by a "camera"
A painting should involve "paint"

And so on and so forth.

It seems that it's getting more and more difficult to define art. Almost anything can be considered art nowadays.

Art has guidelines/blueprints. Not rules.

From a very tradional and narrow sense, art does has rules (in terms of composition and style). But since the vanguardists of the 20th century, this has changed quite a bit. Many of these artists chose to break the existing rules in order to create new art forms that were not as elitist as the ones already established. They created a revolution in the art world. Now there are no rules, although you might still find scholars and critics who abide by those old-traditional rules and art theory.

of course art has rules.  Whether the artist chooses to incorporate those rules into his/her work is entirely up to them.

Art can be anything, but there are "rules" about what is actually pleasing to the eye.  Ever hear of the rule of thirds?  the rule of thirds is a "rule" for a reason.  It helps produce a more pleasing composition.  That doesnt mean the if you divide your photo into thirds it's suddenly a great photo, or that a photo that inst in thirds cant be wonderful.  It is simply a guideline.

Pick up any art or design book and there will be rules and theories.
